Part 1: How Busy Moms Juggle the Myths and Realities of Traveling

The travel industry sells a fantasy of effortless escapes, but for working moms, travel is anything but carefree. These planners, packers and problem-solvers drive 80% of all household travel decisions, aiming to make the most of every trip. Because behind every boarding pass is a mom juggling Teams messages, school calendars, and the quiet thrill of having a hotel room all to herself.
By exploring major travel sites run by women for women and interviewing working moms, I’ve uncovered the reality behind picture-perfect Instas. This two-part series first reveals how moms navigate the joy, chaos, and complexity of traveling for both work and play. Then, I’ll uncover how hotels and Airbnbs can elevate their marketing to truly connect with this powerful demographic.
Beyond the (Business Class) Boarding Pass
When KC learned she’d be traveling regularly for work, she was excited. Yes, she was a new mom, but her husband and parents were ready to pitch in. After looking up the conference hotel she’d be staying at, KC could already see herself enjoying nearby restaurants, spas, and the city energy.
But her vision cracked almost immediately. Upon arrival, she realized her room didn’t have a fridge to store her breast milk, her “liquid gold.” She had already been forced to dump some at airport security, so no fridge was a disheartening setback.
“It’s hard to be a working, traveling mother.”
After long days in conference sessions, she didn’t have the energy to explore the city. The massage she’d planned? No time. The restaurants she’d bookmarked? Out of reach thanks to her company’s strict meal allotment.
What began as excitement quickly turned into exhausted days spent missing her baby, pumping and dumping and trying to absorb hours upon hours of conference material.
Checking Luxury at the Leisure Trip Door
ME travels often for quick business trips that are easy, efficient and “a nice break from the norm.” But family vacations were a different story. Those smiling, coordinated family photos you see online? That was them… occasionally. Most of the time was spent figuring out who wanted to do what, how to maximize their time and what trips fit into everyone’s budget (budget=a word most travel ads conveniently ignore).
In Puerto Rico, though, everything really was picture-perfect: the resort, the food, the beaches, the vibe. Until their flight was delayed after checkout, leaving them exhausted with nowhere to rest. On a whim, they booked an airport hotel room that promised comfort.
Instead, they opened the door to the smallest hotel room any of them had ever seen — two double beds for ten people.
“The hotel room at the airport was the smallest hotel room I’ve ever seen in my life… five of us laying like sardines in each bed, trying to relax.”
They laughed through the chaos, dodged each other’s elbows (and farts), and were never happier to board a plane home.
Behind the Scenes of Sites for Busy Moms
When SM travels for business or pleasure, she leans heavily on sites like Hotels.com. Her company often selects her accommodations, but when she has flexibility, she combs through reviews and photos to choose a place that fits her needs.
“It has to be a nice hotel… clean, modern, and with comfortable beds.”
For family trips, she turns to Airbnb or VRBO. Because she usually travels with extended family or friends, space is essential — especially bathrooms. A bathroom per couple? Non-negotiable.
But when her daughter went away to college and she and her husband began making frequent trips to Muncie, Indiana, VRBO listings weren’t always as accurate as they appeared. After a few disappointing stays, they finally found a host who offered a clean, modern, reliable home away from home. Once they found their “spot,” they booked it far in advance for every visit.
Planning to Create Memories that Matter
Whether for business or leisure, most moms who travel share the same goal: to come home happy, fulfilled and with memories (or insights) that last longer than the time spent away. For busy moms juggling careers, families, homes, and more, planning ahead with accuracy is essential.
So how can hospitality brands help turn plans into reality for this powerful market? Check out Part Two of my series to find out.
